Wildpoldsried, March 26th, 2024 – sonnen, one of the world’s technology leaders for smart and digital connected energy storage, today announced the start of its Virtual Power Plant in Sweden. As a precondition, sonnen has been rigorously testing the seamless integration with the national grid with 35 distributed households for a number of months.
Our VPP will be fully operational in Sweden by 2024. In straightforward terms, a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of smaller energy-producing and storage units, including solar panels, inverters, and batteries, working harmoniously to assist the electricity grid during periods of imbalance.
The goal is to increase this capacity to 1 GWh in the next few years. Among other things, sonnen’s virtual power plant provides capacity for the German transmission grid to compensate for frequency fluctuations in the power grid (frequency containment reserve) or to participate in electricity trading on the stock exchange.
In addition to Germany, sonnen also operates virtual power plants in the U.S., Australia, and Italy. This means that the Allgäu-based company exports a key technology for the energy transition worldwide.
That battery network stands ready to stabilise the grid in the event of grid fluctuations, that could cause a disruption in the power supply to homes across Sweden. With this configuration, households unleash the full potential of their battery system and save electricity costs.
The total capacity of this virtual power plant, currently 250 MWh, is growing continuously and is expected to reach 1 GWh in the next few years. This will provide the power grid with a digital and decentralised buffer storage that can balance the supply and demand of renewable energies.

The study aimed to investigate the performance of the proposed virtual power plant managed by a hybrid energy storage system (HESS). Here, we present the key findings obtained from the experimental setup. Our findings indicate that higher levels of sunlight exposure are not necessarily indicative of reduced battery performance.
Beside the self-consumption of solar energy, customers benefit from such services via the energy contract sonnenFlat and receive a share of the profits from the virtual power plant. Oliver Koch, CEO of sonnen, said: "Almost any country that switches to clean energy will, sooner or later, reach the limits of its power grids by merely adding capacity.
