Hydraulic accumulators can be encountered in hydraulic systems for accomplishing different functionalities. Sizing an accumulator means finding its optimal volume and precharge pressure, for a given set of operating conditions.
Hydraulic accumulators require constant pressure rails to couple with the accumulator. Without them, additional pumps and valves are needed, and the accumulator can only manage the power of actuators in the same circuit.
A hydraulic accumulator can be immediately used as an energy source because it already stores a volume of pressured hydraulic oil. The most widely used accumulator is one in which hydraulic oil is contained with an overpressure of nitrogen. Energy is stored via compression of the nitrogen; the hydraulic oil serves as the working fluid.
