But as the battery industry develops and grows in many countries simultaneously, investors, materials, and expertise become scarce. If Sweden is to succeed in the battery field, competence will be required from both Sweden and the rest of the world.
Deep in a dense, sub-Arctic pine forest in northern Sweden, a flat grey structure blends into both the snow and the overcast horizon. This improbable location is the birthplace of one of the most important industrial projects in Europe: its first homegrown battery factory.
In an interview with NPR, its CEO Peter Carlsson says the company was created to help make the continent self-sufficient on the batteries that will power the future of energy — and less dependent on China. "Europe was not really having any supply chains," he says. "We were all very, very Asia dependent. That was the key driver why we started this."
