This study analyzes key components such as rectifiers, impedance matching networks, and antennas, and evaluates their applications in biomedical and IoT devices. The review concludes with future directions to increase bandwidth, improve power conversion efficiency, and optimize RF energy harvesting system designs.
Electromagnetic energy harvesting holds a promising future for energizing low power electronic devices in wireless communication circuits. This article presents an RF energy harvesting system that can harvest energy from the ambient surroundings at the downlink radio frequency range of GSM-900 band.
There are other research initiatives in RF energy harvesting as a whole that are related to design integrated RFEH systems. One emerging area is the millimetre (mm)-wave frequencies RF Transceivers in CMOS technology [48, 52, 67, 96].
Despite the abundance of literature on RF energy harvesting and its technology, only a few surveys have comprehensively reviewed all the key recent technologies, such as metamaterial-inspired antenna designs, Schottky diode, rectenna, and power generated in RFEH design.
RF energy harvesting is the concept of scavenging the electromagnetic waves that are propagated in a free space medium and converting them to usable electrical energy for powering up electronic devices or sensor interfaces.
The most important parameters affecting the efficiency of the RF energy harvester are the input power level, frequency band, impedance matching and voltage multiplier circuits, load resistance and the selection of diodes. RF energy harvester designs should be optimized in terms of these parameters.
