In this review of Sweden’s energy policies, the IEA looks at how the country is managing its energy transition, as well as how this transition affects energy security. Sweden’s electricity system – based on nuclear, hydro and a growing share of wind power – is nearly fossil‑free.
Energy efficiency measures are key to Sweden achieving its energy policy objectives. The Government is now investing SEK 850 million in more renewable energy, more efficient energy use and more energy and climate advisory services in 2018, with additional funding in 2019 and 2020. Future innovation policies and measures must be tailored to meet the targets contained in Sweden’s 2016 Energy Agreement. The Energy Agreement is a national roadmap to an entirely renewable power system and a net zero carbon economy, supported by a large majority in the Swedish parliament.
The Swedish Energy Agency can contribute to the success of power system upgrades by continuing to fund projects aimed at helping municipalities to mobilise local companies in the construction and maintenance of new wind power or network expansion projects (with services including hotels, catering, electricians, etc.).
The Government proposes that the Swedish Energy Agency receive an additional SEK 10 million per year from 2018 for work to enhance civilian defence in energy supply (appropriations 1:1 Swedish Energy Agency and 1:8 Electricity preparedness).
