Community shared energy storage (CSES) is a solution to alleviate the uncertainty of renewable resources by aggregating excess energy during appropriate periods and discharging it when renewable generation is low. CSES involves multiple consumers or producers sharing an energy storage system.
Definition 1. Energy Sharing refers to the business model to optimise energy system operation by acquiring, providing, or sharing access to facilities or energy, leveraging advanced information and communication technologies. Market structures for energy sharing generally fall in three categories as shown in Figure 2.
An EU-funded project unveiled an innovative energy trading platform that creates ‘virtual pools’ of connected energy storage systems within a neighbourhood. The platform can boost collaboration between users, helping them to make the most of their distributed energy storage systems.
In fact, shared energy storage systems can be an effective way to increase the efficiency and reliability of the energy system, regardless of whether consumers have their own PV systems or not. Comparing Figs. 4 and 5 demonstrates that CSES decreases the injecting power of consumers into the local grid.
Recent pilot projects have tested energy trading platforms at various geographical scales for different entities, e.g. Piclo [ 25] and P2P3M [ 26] in the U.K., TransActive Grid [ 27] in the U.S., and Enexa [ 28] in South Australia. A comparison of those pilot projects can be found in ref. [ 29 ].
In this model, the operator of the shared storage system sets the energy prices based on the expected demand and supply conditions in the market. The community members then use this pricing information to determine the time of consumption and the amount of energy [ 19, 20 ].
