The approaches performing energy management strategies, solution algorithms, and systems simulations to overcome many problems in low voltage distribution systems. Furthermore, in this paper some techniques and methodologies are considered to improve energy management of off-grid power systems with microgrid.
While mentions of large tied-grid energy storage technologies will be made, this chapter focuses on off-grid storage systems in the perspective of rural and island electrification, which means in the context of providing energy services in remote areas. The electrical load of power systems varies significantly with both location and time.
Off-grid systems are systems without a connection to the electrical grid, ensuring autonomously the demand with local power generation. The provision of secure, affordable, and modern energy services for everyone is essential to improve the population quality of life, reduce poverty, and improve the economic growth.
Abstract: This paper presents the updated status of energy storage (ES) technologies, and their technical and economical characteristics, so that, the best technology can be selected either for grid-connected or off-grid power system applications.
Traditionally, remote off-grid communities have used diesel oil-based systems to generate electricity. Increased technological options and lower costs have resulted in the adoption of hybrid renewable energy-based systems.
Moreover, to verify the obtained results, the developed system was simulated using HOMER Pro software, and the results are compared and discussed. The results indicated that the designed hybrid energy system is able to perform completely off-grid, while satisfying 99.9% of the yearly electricity demand.
