Spot market trading, on the one hand, takes places on an intermediate platform through market clearing. It can quickly respond to supply and demand volatility and achieve real-time balance between supply and demand. While there is risk of fluctuations in market clearing price, which may damage the interests of power enterprises.
In generally, for the retailer, each additional unit of demand pushes up the spot price, which represents a positive market impact cost associated with spot trading. In such case, the market power of the retailer and the generators is equal (as stated in Lemma 2).
The spot price is related to their uncertain demand and supply. While in electricity market, the spot price is usually the clearing price matched by bid functions of market participants. Oliveira et al. (2013) investigate the optimal contract for power trading and analyze the player’s profitability on spot and future markets.
The first effect increases the total amount of electricity in transaction, which benefits the generators. This effect dominates only when spot trading costs are sufficiently high. The latter effect depresses the transaction prices, which can hurt generators’ profits.
The condition of negative market impact cost is different from the general findings in previous studies (Green, 1999; Mendelson & Tunca, 2007). In generally, for the retailer, each additional unit of demand pushes up the spot price, which represents a positive market impact cost associated with spot trading.
For the residents who opt to stay in the spot market, they suffer from the invasion of the future market. This could lead to lower demand and price in the original spot market. We call this the conflict between the two markets.
