The Commission started a reflection on a European strategy on external energy engagement to be adopted in 2022. This strategy aims to pursue a global energy transition, ensuring security of supply and clean technologies.
A cross-matching exercise between the provisions of the European legislation and the proposed national legislation has led to the identification of the gaps and discrepancies in the elements of the proposed national electricity market rules in relevance to energy storage.
The EU has set out its objectives for regional cooperation for the 2021-2027 multiannual financial framework. These objectives include reinforcing sustainable energy security, collectively speeding up a green energy transition, and promoting clean energy investment with neighbouring regions in the East, the South, and the Western Balkans.
The Commission is continuing to monitor energy price developments and will ensure its response to the current energy price surge remains proportionate and focussed on those most affected. It will also continue to develop a legislative framework fit for our enhanced climate and energy targets.
As an emerging technology, the Department recognizes the need for a regulatory and legislative framework for energy storage. Such a framework should be developed through a thorough policy analysis process to ensure an appropriate level of consideration.
