14 large-scale battery storage systems (BESS) have come online in Sweden to deploy 211 MW / 211 MWh into the region. Developer and optimiser Ingrid Capacity and energy storage owner-operator BW ESS have been working in partnership to deliver 14 large-scale BESS projects throughout Sweden’s grid, situated in electricity price areas SE3 and SE4.
On top of this, Sweden is ranked number one on the World Economic Forum’s energy transition index. The current smart grid system is a result of gradual coevolution between the Swedish power grid and the power generation.
Currently, the Swedish power grid is highly reliable, very few outages last for more than a day across the nation. In fact, the Swedish electrical system is one of the most reliable and sustainable systems in the world (World Energy Council, 2015).

Firstly, the situation in Sweden with grid capacity shortage, clarified from both the literature review (Swedenergy, 2019) and the interviews, indicates an issue in the infrastructure of the existing regime.
