The Vanadium Recovery Project, a joint venture between Australian companies Critical Metals Ltd and Neometals Ltd, paves the way for a significant increase in high purity vanadium (V) production and self-sufficiency in Europe. The plant is to be situated in Pori, Finland.
Vanadium is critical for Europe’s green transition and strategic autonomy. It is not yet produced in significant volumes in the region, without a reliance on non-European feedstock. Instead of mining for resources, we at Novana recycle industrial side streams into high purity vanadium in Pori, Finland, close to our Nordic supply chain.
The plant is to be situated in Pori, Finland. The vanadium will be recovered from production slag provided by SSAB´s steel production operations in Finland and Sweden under a long-term supply agreement with Critical Metals.
Approximately 75% of global vanadium supply is produced in China, South Africa, and Russia. Critical Metals and Neometals propose using a patent pending low energy-low emission, hydrometallurgical process to recover vanadium from steel slag whilst also producing a chemically stable secondary product.
The vanadium bearing stockpiles used in the VRP are some of the highest-grade vanadium feedstock sources in the world – Critical Metals and Neometals are positioning to become a major producer of vanadium in Europe commencing late 2024. Vanadium is of high importance to the EU economy and has high risks associated with its supply.
The proprietary hydrometallurgical flowsheet suitable for recovering vanadium from the slag has been tested prior in Neometals’ pilot plant in Perth, Australia. The hydrometallurgical leaching process path has significant operational, cost and risk advantages over the traditional pyrometallurgical process route.
