Sweden has delivered the world’s first shipment of steel produced without the use of fossil fuels, a major milestone on the road towards cutting carbon emissions from industry. A shipment of the steel was delivered to Swedish truck maker Volvo AB, but industrial quantities of the stuff won’t be available until 2026.
The steel plant will produce 2.1 million tonnes of sponge iron and 2.5 million tonnes of steel per year in the first phase. The plant will be the first of its kind and is central to full-scale industrial production of low-carbon steel. “The Swedish support programmes are essential for the establishment of new large-scale industry in Sweden.
The Swedish Energy Agency is now granting Stegra state aid to build the world's first fully integrated steel plant where iron is manufactured using fossil-free hydrogen made from water and fossil-free electricity. The state aid is provided through the Swedish government-initiated Industrial Leap programme and is approved by the European Commission.
Scandinavia has a very long history in iron and steelmaking based on abundant natural resources in forests, hydro-power, and high-grade iron ores. Globally as well as in Scandinavia, the steel industry in periods has met big challenges that have resulted in changes of the industrial landscape, as shown in Figure 3 . Figure 3.
