The Swedish Energy Agency is now granting Stegra state aid to build the world's first fully integrated steel plant where iron is manufactured using fossil-free hydrogen made from water and fossil-free electricity. The state aid is provided through the Swedish government-initiated Industrial Leap programme and is approved by the European Commission.
No – this is reality: a totally new, green steel facility to be built in northern Sweden making use of SMS group expertise and equipment. This hydrogen-based direct reduction plant will be fully integrated, transforming virgin raw materials into finished steel. Works will start in 2022 and the site is expected to be operational by 2025.
In nearby Luleå, the Technical University and Swedens largest bulk goods harbour, are key factors for the plans. In 2030 the new steel plant will produce 5 million tons of fossil free steel, replacing coking coal with electricity and hydrogen.
Based near Boden, in northern Sweden, Stegra will be the world’s first renewable hydrogen-based integrated steel mill. Stegra opens up the prospect of zero CO 2 steel – a true revolution in a sector that currently emits two tons of the greenhouse gas or more per ton of steel produced. The industrial giants will now start building a larger factory in Gällivare, three hours North of Luleå, in the heart of Swedish Lapland. The long-term plan is to build more hydrogen iron factories and completely decarbonise steel production in Sweden — slashing 10% of the countries emissions.
The steel plant will produce 2.1 million tonnes of sponge iron and 2.5 million tonnes of steel per year in the first phase.
